Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)

A work and holiday visa allows young adults to have an extended holiday in Australia and work to fund it for a period of up to 12 months per visa. Up to three visas may be granted, provided work eligibility criteria are met. The subclass 417 and subclass 462 visa essentially have the same purpose, although they differ in their eligible passport requirements. The subclass 462 visa also include additional English language and education requirements and require a letter of support from certain governments.

What can you do with a Work and Holiday Visa?

  • Work for a short-term period in Australia to pay for your holiday here
  • Work for up to 6 months for the same employer
  • Study for up to 4 months
  • Travel to and from Australia as many times as you want
  • Do 3 months of specified (rural) work on your first Work and Holiday Visa
  • Do 6 months of specified (rural) work on your second Work and Holiday Visa
  • You cannot include family members or dependent children on your application

Key Eligibility Criteria

  • Be citizen of and hold an eligible passport from an eligible country/jurisdiction
  • Be 18 to 30 years of age (inclusive) at time of application
  • Have enough funds to support your stay in and travel out of Australia
  • Have completed 3 months of specified work to apply for a second Work and Holiday Visa
  • Have completed 6 months of specified work to apply for a third Work and Holiday Visa
  • Meet specific education requirements, which differ country-to-country
  • Have a level of functional English
  • Obtain a letter of support from your government, if required
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Acknowledge and adhere to the Australian Values Statement

Work and Holiday Visa Application Process

  1. Check your eligibility for the Work and Holiday Visa
  2. Organise health exams
  3. Inform the Department of Home Affairs if you are planning to engage the services of a registered migration agent to help you apply for the visa
  4. Gather your identity documents, character documents, language and education documents, letter of support and proof of sufficient funds
  5. Apply online and outside of Australia (for your first Work and Holiday Visa), and inside Australia for subsequent Work and Holiday Visa
  6. Pay the application fee
  7. Wait for outcome (approximately 9-15 days)
  8. Be notified of outcome
