Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870)
This temporary visa was introduced 17 April 2019 and allows parents of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who meet income requirements visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years per application.
Cost and Processing Time
Application fees are significantly lower than contributory parent visas, but sponsoring children but have a taxable income greater than $83,454.80. Processing times are not yet available.
What can you do with this visa?
- Stay in Australia for up to 3 or 5 years
- Apply for a second visa after a short period outside Australia, allowing parents to spend up to 10 years in Australia
- Cannot work in Australia
- This visa does not lead to permanent residence
Key Eligibility Criteria
- Have an approved Parent Sponsor before lodging an application
- Be the biological, adoptive, step-parent or parent-in-law of the Parent Sponsor
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have health insurance
- Meet health and character requirements
- Have access to enough money to support your stay in Australia
- Have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily
Application Process
- Check your eligibility – ensure you have an approved Parent Sponsor
- Gather all documents
- Apply for the visa online within 6 months of sponsorship approval
- Unless you have Permission to Apply in Australia within 60 days of approval
- Pay the Application Fee
- Applications will be assessed and applicants informed of outcome
